An LQM Video Tribute to 1967′s Summer of Love – Peace, Love, and Music

The year 1967 turned out some of the most legendary music of all time. Legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead were just embarking on the major music scene of San Francisco’s Haight/Ashbury district and were about to embark on the world. Below, a video tribute to some of LQM’s favorite artists from that era, complete with a little caption about the artists. Enjoy!

Jefferson Airplane – ‘White Rabbit’

*White Rabbit was written by Grace Slick, when she was still with a prior band called The Great Society. She provided the song for her first recorded album with Jefferson Airplane.

Eric Burdon & The Animals – ‘San Franciscan Nights’

*San Francisco was the mecca during the Summer of Love. If you were young, and wanted to be free, you went to Frisco and hung out in the Haight/Ashbury district. Eric Burdon & The Animals are known for such hits as “The House of the Rising Sun”, “We Gotta Get out of This Place”, “It’s My Life”, and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”.

Rob Grill & The Grass Roots – ‘Let’s Live For Today’

*Rob Grill passed away on July 11, 2011, after being in a coma from a head injury he sustained after he suffered a stroke. The Grass Roots had 17 studio albums.

The Grateful Dead – ‘Touch of Grey’

*Who doesn’t like The Dead?

The Doors – ‘Break On Through (To The Other Side)’

*Off of their 1967 self-titled debut album, you just can’t bring up the Summer of Love and not include The Doors.

Vanilla Fudge – ‘Keep Me Hangin’ On’

*Vanilla Fudge’s first single, recorded in one take and extended from just under three minutes to over six minutes long, ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’ reached #6 on the Hot 100 charts. The Supremes took it to #1 and were the original artists on this song.

Jimi Hendrix – ‘Purple Haze’ (Live, @Monterey Pop Festival 1967)

*This one needs no explanation :)

Janis Joplin and Big Brother & The Holding Company

For my final video tribute to the Summer of Love, I’ll leave you with the self-titled debut album of Janis Joplin & Big Brother. She was only with us a short time, but ‘Pearl’ left a legacy that has yet to be matched.

The current incarnation of Big Brother and the Holding Companyincludes:

Cathy Richardson - lead vocals
Sam Andrew – guitar, vocals
Ben Nieves – guitar
Peter Albin – bass
David Getz – drums

Thanks for remembering the Summer of Love with LQM! Peace, Love, and Music!
